Advent Resources

Advent, the season of watching, waiting, and preparation for the celebration of Jesus’ nativity, begins on Sunday, November 27. Here are just a couple of examples of the devotional activities, events and resources available online.

“With ev’ry passing day, as sunlight disappears, the dusk descends, and prayers ascend for strength to calm our fears”: The hand-drawn Advent calendar that so many look forward to each year from creators Tom Mousin and Merry Watters is available for 2022 HERE.

Each day on their calendar offers a Scripture reading and a suggested devotion. The best part: SUBSCRIBE to receive a daily e-mail reflection on the calendar’s devotions.

AdventWord. Each day is marked by a different word and there is a reflection to go with each day. You can access Advent Word HERE and, if you subscribe, they will send the Word for the day with a short reflection to you via email.

I use AdventWord as a prompt for sketching – each day a different theme. I take no more than 30 minutes (and often much less) and do a sketch prompted by the word for the day. Poets or those who journal could do their thing similarly. Let the prompt take you to your own reflections this Advent.

Advent Resource for Families. Looking for a low-cost downloadable PDF for families with young children? Check this out: An Illustrated Advent for Families: God With Us. This resource includes:

  • weekly family devotions, including a suggested scripture to read, a short reflection, discussion questions, an activity, and a prayer.
  • Coloring Pages for each week’s devotion.
  • Calendar starts on December 1, and each day brings an opportunity to complete a simple activity as a family.
